I just want to share a short update on a new type of content on the blog. I’ve started to add backpack manufacturer brands on a single page called Backpack Brands. If you click on the brand, you will get some information about the manufacturer and […]
Millican is a small British outdoor accessories manufacturer based in Lake District, UK. The company was founded in 2008 by Jorrit and Nicky Forbes-Jorritsma. Its name, Millican, comes from Millican Dalton, a London insurance clerk who upped sticks from his comfortable life in 1903 and moved to a cave in the Lake District to become an alternative lifestyler.
As a “traddition”, they often name their backpacks after local heroes. (Andy) Smith in Smith the Roll Pack, for example, was a mountain biker who took over an abandoned carpet factory and turned it into a community space for local artists and craftspeople. Smith the Roll Pack is a simple, functional bag made with lightweight weatherproof canvas. Neat enough for the city, tough enough for the great outdoors.
In the “About us” section on their website, Jorrit and Nicky write that they want to make “bags with a difference.” So what’s that difference? It’s the eco-friendly nature of their bags. Millican bags are produced using mainly organic cotton, hemp, recycled polyester and vegetable tanned leather. Millican produce “sustainable backpacks for the conscious travellers”, as they often say. But that does not mean they don’t care about functionality and style. In contrast, their backpacks are both stylish and extremely functional.
Their conscious selection of sustainable materials is well presented in one of their most popular backpacks, the Matthew The Daypack (Matthew is another local hero, of course). Matthew the Daypack is made from 100% weatherproofed organic cotton canvas, and vegetable tanned leather. With three internal pockets, including a laptop sleeve, and two external water bottle pockets, Matthew has enough space for all the stuffs you need for a day or two out.
Be a conscious traveller, choose Millican!
